The original implies that humans have devolved as a species, not succumbed to a silencing disease.
Either way, the virus has to do a lot of heavy lifting in the trio of blockbuster films. Virologically speaking, could we actually see a real-world virus this contagious and adaptable?
One that can cause such a massive variety of symptoms? The short answer is no, says scientist Ann Powers , who studies emerging infectious diseases with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In fact, had the series stuck more closely to reality, they might have ended up with another, less glamorous, franchise entirely, he says: Planet of the Sheep.
Will Rodman James Franco designs a declawed retrovirus to insert the therapeutic genes into brain cells. Retroviruses are the category of virus HIV belongs to, not the flu.
It goes horribly wrong when the virus turns out to be fatal to humans, and spreads across the globe. Instead, retroviruses typically require intimate contact, like sharing needles, unprotected sex, childbirth, or breastfeeding to hop from person to person.
Hotez thought of one exception, though: a sheep retrovirus called Jaagsiekte that spreads via airborne droplets from sheep to sheep, causing lung cancer in the animals.
Scientists really do use viruses as couriers to deliver foreign genes into cells, however, and retroviruses are especially good at this. Even so, research in this area is closely monitored for that remote possibility, says Stephen Russell , a Mayo Clinic scientist investigating virally delivered treatments for cancer.
The viral plotline continues in War for the Planet of the Apes , when the virus mutates to spread among the survivors.
This time around, simian flu 2. Retroviruses are prone to mutating. When viruses make copies of themselves, it can be more like retyping a paragraph than copying and pasting it.
That can introduce genetic typos, or mutations, that build up in the population of viruses circulating in the body, and in the community.
But, the more mutations circulating, he says, the more likely it is that one might turn out to be advantageous if conditions change.
Thats how adaptations like drug resistance can emerge. Still, it would be an extraordinary feat for a virus to accrue enough mutations in just a few years to suddenly start rapidly spreading in a population that had previously been immune, let alone to produce such radically different, unrelated symptoms in victims.
Spoilers ahead! Unfortunately, Caesar does indeed die in the film, and, to make things even sadder, he dies fighting to protect his ape community.
It's meant to be a death for a noble cause, as he squares off against the radical leader of the human army, The Colonel, a man who would rather wipe apes off the face of the planet than even attempt to co-habitate peacefully.
This conflict between Caesar and The Colonel breeds the kind of discord between apes and humans that audiences were introduced to in older films.
All things considered, it makes sense that the intensity of this clash is such that it results in major deaths on both sides, including Caesar's.
From the very beginning of the franchise, it's been established that Caesar is a wise leader, one who is always driven to do the right thing.
He's often shown attempting to navigate his human upbringing with his ape instincts, which is how he ends up in the position of power that he holds in War of the Planet of the Apes.
This ranking and his meaning to the ape world makes his death even more impactful. It also makes sense within the confines of the story that Caesar dies doing the right thing and fighting to protect his community, a community that will eventually rule over the entire Earth.
Also, for what it's worth, it would make sense that this is where Caesar's story ends.

Not really. Caesar is the child of Cornelius also McDowell and Zira Kim Hunter , who traveled back in time in Escape from the Planet of the Apes after the planet was destroyed at the end of Beneath the Planet of the Apes this franchise rules.
Bright Eyes has increased intelligence from the drug, and that intelligence is passed on to her son, Caesar.
The original Planet of the Apes takes place in the year Rise takes place in , Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes place in , and War takes place in To assume that War is taking us back to the Apes is to disregard the new movies as a reboot.
This is a good thing because it leaves future filmmakers should the franchise continue the room to branch out and tell new stories rather than be tied to the film.
Dawn touches on this with the battle between Caesar and Koba Toby Kebbell , but their actions are with regards to how they should approach humanity—Caesar wants peace, and Koba wants war.
With humanity now no longer at the top of the food chain and Apes as the dominant species, this makes way for new, interesting questions.
Those questions become even more fascinating with Caesar out of the picture. War wisely leaves his young son, Cornelius, alive at the end, but without a father.
The acting is good and as flagged above the special effects are outstanding: the production team clearly saw "I am Legend" and wanted to go one better with the San Francisco streets.
And all topped off with a fine and un-obtrusive score by Michael Giacchino. Highly recommended, and I am now looking forward to the next sequel, planned for a release.
